Challenges in accessing information are contributing to young people failing to access job opportunities within the district.
The use of platforms such as the public notice boards to flight adverts has proved to be inadequate as the majority young people fail to access these job adverts in time.
In the long run this has resulted in youths from other districts benefiting from the job vacancies availed by businesses, government stakeholders and non-governmental organizations operating in the district.
Speaking to Matobo Youth Development Initiative (MYDI) correspondent, ward 19 Councilor Nqobizitha Ngwenya highlighted that there is a need for the job opportunities to be used to equip the local youths in the district.
“I believe that there has to be an arrangement that recognizes the need to empower our graduates and qualified youths.
NGOs are our development partners, and we expect them to impart some skills to our youths so that they gain experience in managing those programs they implement,” highlighted Ngwenya.
Matobo district is a developing rural area endowed with natural resources, particularly tourism and mining activities which are expected to benefit the people within the district.
This has led to people in the district having high expectations on employment opportunities for young people as they believe that locals who are employed have the capacity to develop and grow the local economy.
What has proved to be a challenge is the failure of the opportunities within the district to reach people in remote areas who need jobs.
Matobo Youth Development Initiative (MYDI) is an organization committed in bridging the gap of access to information so that young people in remote and vulnerable groups do not miss out on livelihood opportunities.
Through its programming, the organization seeks to partner with government departments and non-governmental organizations to disseminate information to the public so that young people can benefit from the programs that are meant for them.
Young people in Matobo district have access to WhatsApp, a social media platform that they use to disseminate information, which is where job opportunity information can be circulated.
Community and ward leaders can also be used to spread the information to the youths in their communities so that youths have ample time to apply for the opportunities.
